How Virtual Cards Can Help You Manage Subscription Fees Effortlessly

While canceling a Twitch subscription is easy, some companies may make the cancellation process difficult on purpose. To keep you subscribed for longer and prolong your payments, they may resort to various sneaky tactics—from keeping you on hold for long hours and using guilting language in their online cancellation funnel to requiring handwritten letters and in-person visits.

If you fail to pay close attention to the cancellation instructions, you could miss a step and get charged for another month or year of services you don't want. In some cases, you may take all the required steps and still incur charges due to an honest error or technical mishap.

To protect your bank account against excessive charges, you can use a virtual card from Privacy to pay for subscriptions, be it another streaming platform like Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, and Apple TV, or an everyday tool like Adobe, NordVPN, and Dropbox.

Linked to a real funding source, a virtual card masks your real financial info with random card numbers at checkout, adding a protective layer around your online transactions. A comprehensive virtual card provider like Privacy also offers robust card settings to help you limit how much a company can charge you for their services.

Privacy Virtual Cards—Your Effective Shield Against Overcharges

After providing your bank account or debit card information to Privacy, you can create multiple virtual cards for one-time transactions and recurring subscriptions such as LA Fitness, Philo, Tinder Gold, and the New York Times. Learn about the two types of Privacy Virtual Cards in the table below:

Type of Privacy Virtual Card How It Works  What You Can Use It For
Single-Use It closes automatically a few minutes after you complete your first transaction. You can use it for one-time transactions with vendors whose credibility you're unsure of and for purchases on websites you don't plan on visiting again.
Merchant-Locked It "locks" to the first vendor you transact it with, and you can use it repeatedly at that same merchant. You can use it to shop on your go-to websites and for recurring payments like subscriptions

You can also close or pause your Privacy Cards and set spending limits on them without affecting the linked funding source. Learn below how these features give you more financial control over your subscription payments:

  • Card pausing/closing—When you decide to stop a subscription, pause or close the card you used to pay for it to avoid further charges. Privacy will decline all charge attempts on the card, allowing you to focus on the company's cancellation process without the fear of unexpected charges in the meantime.
  • Spending limits—By setting a spending limit on the said card, you can ensure that the merchant can't intentionally or accidentally charge you more than you've agreed. Privacy will block any transaction that surpasses your preset limit.

  • Mobile app—By installing the Privacy mobile app, available for Android and iOS, you can create new cards and manage existing ones on the go. You can enable push notifications to receive to-the-minute notifications when one of your cards is used or declined.
