Protect Your Payments

Like many payment card issuers, PNC Bank protects its cardholders with a zero liability policy on fraudulent transactions with their credit or debit cards[1]. However, these transactions aren’t the only types of payments on your PNC bank statement that might prompt you to file a dispute.

This guide will teach you about the PNC charge dispute process, the steps to follow, and other essential information about contesting payments. You'll also learn about virtual cards and ways they can help you avoid future disputes.

Why Should You Dispute a Transaction?

Fraudulent transactions are a common reason for filing a payment dispute. They happen when someone uses your debit or credit card without your authorization to make purchases or withdraw money from your account. If you notice a transaction you believe is fraudulent, PNC recommends you call them immediately at 1-800-558-8472[2].

Still, there are other valid reasons for filing a dispute, including:

  • Duplicate charges
  • Incorrect amounts charged
  • Charges for canceled or returned purchases that weren’t correctly refunded
  • Goods or services not received
  • Recurring charges for subscriptions you already canceled

Before filing for a dispute, it's best to first contact the merchant and try to resolve the issue. They may be willing to issue a refund, offer store credit or a replacement item, or even cancel the charge if it hasn’t been posted to your account yet.

However, if you can’t resolve the issue with the merchant, it's time to initiate a dispute with PNC.

How To Dispute a Charge on PNC Debit or Credit Cards

There are three ways to dispute a charge on a PNC card:

  1. Online via PNC Online Banking
  2. Over the phone
  3. Via physical mail

To dispute a credit card payment, you can also call the PNC Credit Card Customer Service at 1-800-282-7541[3].

Be sure to have all the necessary information ready, such as your account information, the details of the transaction in question, and any supporting documents that may help with your case. The customer service representative will guide you through the process and inform you of any additional steps or documentation required.

How To Dispute a Transaction on PNC via Physical Mail

If you want to dispute a PNC credit card transaction via physical mail, you can send a letter to the following address[3]:

PNC Bank
P.O. Box 3429
Pittsburgh, PA 15230

In the dispute letter, you should include:

  1. Your name and account number
  2. The dollar amount of the charge in question
  3. A description of the disputed transaction and why you believe it's wrong
  4. Supporting documents or evidence, such as receipts, product photos, and copies of your email correspondence with the merchant

Consider sending your letter via certified mail with a return receipt requested so you have proof that PNC received it.

Can You Dispute a Pending Charge on PNC?

PNC recommends waiting until the pending charge is posted to your account before disputing it[5]

The reason for this is that pending transactions may sometimes be larger than the amount that might appear on your bank account after the transaction is processed and recorded—and this might cause you to dispute a valid charge.

You have 60 days from when PNC sent you a statement containing an erroneous transaction to notify the bank of your desire to dispute the charge[6][7]. From there, the process and the timelines might differ depending on whether the charge was made with your debit or credit card.

If you’re disputing a debit card transaction, PNC will typically investigate and correct the error within 10 business days. If the bank needs more time, it may take up to 45 calendar days to investigate your claim, in which case you’ll be awarded provisional credit[6]

When you dispute a credit card transaction, PNC might take up to 30 days to acknowledge it received your dispute and 90 days to resolve it. If you’re unsatisfied with the result, you can appeal it to PNC in writing within 10 days of receiving the bank’s decision[7].

How To Ensure a Successful PNC Charge Dispute Outcome

To increase your chances of winning a dispute on your PNC debit or credit card transaction, you should:

  • Make sure you have valid grounds for a dispute
  • Strictly follow the dispute timeframe provided by the bank
  • Back up your claim with records of transactions, merchant communication, and any proof of issues with products or services you paid for
  • Stay engaged with the process and react promptly if the outcome is unfavorable

Even if you do everything right, there’s still a chance your dispute will be denied, and you won’t be awarded a chargeback. Disputes can also be lengthy and time-consuming, so you should consider taking a proactive approach to avoid the reasons for filing a dispute in the first place.

One way to reduce the likelihood of needing to file a payment dispute is using virtual cards for online payments. These cards let you make payments as you normally would while masking your real card information to avoid unauthorized or fraudulent charges. If you get your cards from an independent provider like Privacy, you also get robust card controls that help you avoid excessive or accidental charges.

Privacy Cards—Your Defense Against Dispute Challenges

After linking your bank account or debit card to it, Privacy allows you to generate virtual cards with unique 16-card numbers, CVVs, and expiration dates. You can use these cards for online purchases like a regular payment card, knowing your actual card or account numbers are safe from potential fraudsters.

Privacy lets you generate three types of virtual cards:

Card Type How It Works What It’s Best For
Single-Use Single-Use Cards close shortly after completing the first purchase, making them useless to potential fraudsters.
  • One-off transactions

  • Unfamiliar merchants

Merchant-Locked These cards “lock” to the first merchant you use them with and can’t be used elsewhere.
Category-Locked Category-Locked Cards “tie” to a specified merchant category, such as groceries and education, and decline charge attempts by vendors outside the defined category.
  • Budgeting

  • Spending control

You can set spending limits on your Privacy Cards, and Privacy will decline all charges that exceed the limit. This can help you avoid overcharges, hidden fees, and other billing errors that might be a reason to file a dispute.

Privacy also lets you pause or close your Privacy Cards anytime, stopping all further charge attempts on your cards. This can help you avoid accidental charges like those resulting from a lengthy subscription cancellation process.

If you still encounter a charge on a virtual card that you think you should dispute, Privacy will investigate your claim and file a chargeback against the merchant if there are grounds for it.
