Introducing Privacy Everywhere Cards: In-Store Payments Made Easy With Mobile Wallet Compatibility

Until now, Privacy Cards have been limited primarily to online purchases. We’re excited to introduce Privacy Everywhere Cards for flexible, in-person payments.

Make Privacy Payments In‑Store

Everywhere Cards are virtual cards that can be added to your Apple, Google, or Samsung Wallet. That means you can use Privacy for real-world spending–at the grocery store, coffee shop, gas station, and many other merchants where contactless Mastercard payments are accepted.

For added convenience, you can use one Everywhere Card with multiple merchants, unlike our traditional Merchant-Locked Cards that lock to the first merchant they’re used at.

How Privacy Everywhere Cards Work

Like Merchant Cards, Single-Use Cards, and Category Cards, Everywhere Cards are a unique card type that can be selected at the time a Privacy Card is created.

After you’ve created an Everywhere Card, you can use it to make purchases online, or add it to your virtual wallet for in-store shopping.

Everywhere Card features:

  • [New] Add it to your phone’s wallet and tap to pay in-store
  • [New] Use it at multiple businesses, not just one
  • Set spending limits or close a card with one click, just like other Privacy Card types

Why We Built Mobile Wallet Compatibility

We’ve received a lot of feedback from customers requesting the ability to add Privacy Cards to their digital wallets, and it’s easy to understand why.

Digital wallet payments have become one of the fastest-growing ways to pay. They reduce checkout friction and enable consumers to make quick, secure, and contactless purchases directly with their phones or watches.

Unlike traditional payment cards, digital wallets don’t share your actual card number at checkout. Instead, they use a technology called tokenization to substitute your card details with a randomized digital token that’s unique to each transaction. That means merchants never see or store your card number, reducing the risk of fraud or data leaks.

As mobile payments become more widely used, driven by consumers’ focus on security and convenience, we remain committed to delivering products that offer both of those things, along with the added control and protection already built into Privacy.

We launched our beta in November 2024 and spent the following months learning and improving the mobile compatibility experience. One recent update we’re excited about is the addition of push provisioning, which allows customers to seamlessly add their Privacy Card to Apple Pay or Google Pay directly from the Privacy app.

Now, we’re thrilled to announce that Privacy Everywhere Cards are available as a benefit on our Pro and Premium plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why aren’t Privacy Everywhere Cards available to everyone?

Card-present transactions, like those made in person using a digital wallet, involve a different economic structure than card-not-present transactions (like online purchases). For example, platforms like Apple Pay introduce additional processing fees when a card is added to and used within their ecosystems. Additionally, supporting card-present transactions introduces new types of fraud risks that require additional tooling to manage safely.

Over the past several months, our team has invested heavily in building a seamless mobile wallet experience. From tokenization infrastructure to provisioning and fraud monitoring, a lot happens behind the scenes to make in-person digital payments work smoothly and securely.

Right now, the best way for us to continue to invest in and support a first-class mobile wallet experience is by offering Everywhere Cards through our Pro and Premium plans. These plans also come with added benefits, such as more cards, waived foreign transaction fees, and priority support, making them a great value for customers who want more from Privacy.

Can I still use my other card types?

Yes. Everywhere Cards are a new card type, not a replacement for any existing cards or card types. You can still generate Merchant-Locked, Single-Use, and Category-Locked Cards depending on what you need and which paid plan you are on.

What is a digital wallet, and do I need one to use Everywhere Cards?

A digital wallet is an application that securely stores payment information, such as credit or debit cards, and enables electronic transactions. Popular digital wallets like Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet can be accessed from mobile devices, such as smartphones and smartwatches, to facilitate in-person contactless payments.

You don’t need a digital wallet to use Everywhere Cards; you can use them to pay online just like any other card. What makes this Privacy Card type different is that it doesn’t “lock” to the first merchant it’s used at, and can be used at more than one merchant.

How is my personal data protected when I use an Everywhere Card in a digital wallet?

Privacy only shares limited data with wallet providers as required for verification. As with all Privacy purchases, your personal data is never shared with the merchants you shop with.

When making a purchase through your digital wallet, neither your actual card number nor your Privacy Card number is ever shared with the merchant. Instead, a secure token is used for each transaction.

You can read more about what specific information is shared with the wallet providers in our guide on using Privacy Cards with Apple Pay and Google Pay. Learn about how we protect your data in our Privacy Policy.

What makes mobile wallet payments secure?

One key security element of mobile wallet payments is tokenization, which replaces your actual card number with a unique, random code (or “token”) for each transaction. This means your real card details are never shared with the merchant, reducing the risk of fraud or data leaks.

Combined with encryption and biometric authentication like Face ID or fingerprint, mobile wallets offer a highly secure way to pay.

You can learn more about this in our blog post on how digital wallets bring security to payments.
